The time-travelling, nomad chameleon

“We’ve been here 1 year… it’s time to move again…” I’m 16 years old and I’m sad to be saying goodbye to my friends, but I wonder who might be in my future — who will be my next set of friends. I’ve done this so many times before; 16 times in fact…

R emeny Armitage aged 17, living in 1740, The Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn,, Michigan.

My adventures started when I was 8, following a holiday in the States. My parents fell in love with Arizona and decided to stay. We moved from London, all over the States, back to England and an all-girls boarding school in a castle… and back to Detroit, where I went to an all-American high school on an island. One more move with my parents bought me back to London at 20.

My education and my survival was learning how to make friends… I made them fast and I kept them. I adapted. I was a chameleon, I even joined a travelling theatre troupe where I entertained my way around the US… I time traveled, or rather, I worked in a museum, living life in both 1740 and 1882, whilst talking to 2,000 plus people a day. Later, I did a masters in science communication … I was constantly looking at different ways of engaging with people…

All these experiences and my nomadic upbringing have made me who I am today. It has shown me a clear path to this point in my life; where I work with businesses on client care, retention and growth. I want to help people make friends with their clients, so they are loyal advocates of a business who will continue to use them and recommend them. It’s all about building strong and long-lasting relationships and understanding how to better understand how to engage with people — it is as important to me now as it was when I was a child. I love people — talking and engaging with people in every way. Ultimately, I value the importance of loyalty and human relationships over everything else.

When I think back to my 16 year old self, I know I would have been surprised to hear I’d end up in business. However, I would be pleased to know that the years of moving, the goodbyes and the many new hello’s, was worth it. I’ve created a career and a life that I love, where making friends and building good relationships is at the heart of everything I do today.

I’d love to hear what your 16 year old self would say about you and your life now! :)
